Wow… that last quote I posted by Franklin Veaux sure hit a nerve. Already lots of responses via email, skype and twitter. You can read his entire essay regarding SOPA and Copyright here, and I think his point is clarified along with more good stuff to chew on.
Ryan pointed out that, while agreeing with most of the quote, if you believe there’s no benefit for an artist him or herself outside of monetary compensation and a ‘hobbyist’s’ pleasure, that dangerously undervalues the rewards of art to make a point (not to mention the rewards of art as a personal or communal expression). I suspect that Franklin would agree with this (as do I), but the crux of the essay is about whether or not the creation of art can (or should) be able to exist as a vocation.
In other words, if we believe in vocational artistry (as opposed to art as a hobby), then along with all this misguided and flawed SOPA bullshit, we do need to talk about the elephant in the room: Intellectual Property.
I believe that an idea is valuable. And digitized copies of ideas are valuable.
And I’m not only interested in getting paid for the work I create. I also want to pay other people to keep making their art.
