Nathan Johnson

Welcome to my daily blog.
This is where I post things I'm currently working on and thinking about.
I write songs, score films, produce bands, and make visual art and photographs.

I lead a sprawling band/art collective called The Cinematic Underground and run a small independent record label called Cut Narrative . I'm also an artist at The Made Shop with my brothers Marke and Zachary. Twitter @NTJohnson

I am so excited about this song.

Katie’s new album. Cambridge, Ma.
Just finished a long week of vocal recording. Anytime I see multiple screens on a desk I am still compelled to take a photo. As in, “check out how much techmology we is using.”

And then there are days when you write four bridges for a song and throw them all away.

Because, let’s face it, some songs just don’t need a bridge.

Promotional Flyer, The Cinematic Underground. England 2004
This was a flyer for one of the first full Annasthesia shows at the Greenbelt Arts Festival in England, almost exactly five years ago. Anna Chamberlain designed the flyers and we had a whole airport/stewardess thing going on in the festival leading up to the performance.
The British version of the band featured Mearsy (of course) and Zach, who flew out for the week, as well as the core members of another now defunct band called Oversol.
Greenbelt turned out to be a favorite summer event. It is sort of like a much smaller Christian version of Glastonbury (I know, a “Christian version” of anything is a great way to dispel hope, but this turned out to be an amazing weekend with great music). It was at this festival that I discovered Duke Special, Denison Witmer, Rosie Thomas, and Speed Dating*.

*This is sort of a longer story which involves a lot of embarassed justification, but basically Zach and I were being interviewed on a radio show and the hosts were looking for someone to try out speed dating and report back. We both (Zach and I) went, and were sort of simultaneously thrilled and horrified.
I wrote a song about it, which the speed dating company (company?!) edited (because it was a “Christian version” of speed dating) and then put on their website. I’m not sure if my original lyrics were funnier, but I’m pretty sure they rhymed.

Listening to Katie Chastain and Nathan Johnson on the making of Katie’s new album. Can’t think of a better night.
After popping out to Denver for a while to finish 4 more songs with Andrea and then popping over to South Carolina to play for Mel & Matt’s wedding, I came back to Boston where Katie had finished the lyrics for all of the new songs that I had forgotten the guitar parts to.
