The Fray covered Kanye’s Heartless, so we made this new mash-up album cover for them from our How To Save a Life cover & Kanye’s 808’s & Heartbreaks cover.
The Fray - Heartless Cover. Raw Materials
When Scott at Epic called and asked us to do the artwork for The Fray’s version of Heartless, he suggested using elements from Kanye’s art. Since we were doing the cover art for a cover song, Marke and I decided to mash up Kanye’s balloon heart with the shattered bulb I did for How To Save A Life.
Materials: 1 Red Bulb, 1 Blue Posterboard, 1 Desk Lamp, 1 Digital Camera.
The Fray - Heartless cover. Step 1: Red Bulb
After visiting a few stores looking for red bulbs, I found success at a small local hardware store in Arvada.
The Fray - Heartless cover. Step 2: How To Smash A Bulb
When I made the shattered bulb cover for How To Save A Life I was speaking at a school in Colorado and staying with my parents. Three years later, I was back working on Andrea Ball’s new EP and ended up shattering a bulb in the same way on the same kitchen floor.
Note: It is important to smash a bulb inside of something. Especially when you smash it on your Mom’s kitchen floor.
The Fray - Heartless cover. Step 5: Postprodcution
After getting the photo, it’s time to send all the images to Marke at The Made Shop headquarters in Boston for the final photoshop work and typeface elements. One iChat session later (screen sharing is AMAZING, btw), the cover is done and ready to send to iTunes.
My Dad just emailed me this picture he took with his phone during the photoshoot for the back cover of the Fray record (Marke on the left, me on the right). I love the look on our faces. A relieved smile confirming our excitement (and a bit of surprise) that our idea actually worked.
These guys did a much better post of the making of our Heartless cover.
